#35: Last Kiss by Taylor Swift

Well, speaking of heartbreak…might as well just throw this one up too.  I didn’t want to like this song.  Especially knowing the fact it’s probably about a Jonas brother, ugh.  Unfortunately, though, I have to give T-Swizzle credit…this is a fabulously written break up song.  Come on, “I never thought we’d have a last kiss”. Who does, Taylor?

I heard this when I was going through a break up, and you know what?  I just got it.  I didn’t know how to be someone you miss.

I hate identifying with Swift.  But I love it at the same time.

Thanks Taylor, for just getting it.  You’re alright in my book.

#34 When it Rains by Paramore

I have to admit, When it Rains is my favorite song off of Riot!.  I think I love it so much because it is so different than the rest of the album.  I also think Haley’s voice on this track is just perfect.

I first really fell in love this track when I was a freshmen in college and going through a rough time.  It’s a good heartbreak song, and that’s a good adjective to use to describe what I was going through.  I was depressed, and that’s what this song is about.  Sadness, heartbreak.  All those things you would associate with rain.  It really sets up the scene well.

#33: 24 by Switchfoot

To be perfectly honest, I have a love hate relationship with this song.  Not sure why, I just do.  It’s a beautiful song.  I think one of the reasons why I struggle with this song and go up and down, back and forth, is because I can’t quite explain it to myself.  It could mean a multitude of things.  Is it happy?  Is it sad?  I don’t quite know.

I really need to be in a mood to hear this.  I will skip it. However, whenever I just sit with it and really hear it…it is absolutely gorgeous.  I have no idea what its significance is, yet it truly moves me.  It touches at something in me that I can’t quite explain.  Plus, as I already explained, I love everything Switchfoot does.  However, I’m putting this song up, because I find it interesting how I really need to be in a certain place and point in my life to truly love this song.  Whereas other Switchfoot songs I just love.

#32: Downtown Song by Anberlin

Now right here is a song that will put a smile on my face, make me want to jump on my bed or just give someone a big ol’ squeeze.  It oozes happiness and love.  Call me a hopeless romantic, but it’s just the greatest.

Ugh I’m listening to it right now and I can’t take it.  Those lyrics? GAHHH so cute.  This is a little weird, because I’m the least cutesy person I know of.

I guess it’s because I long for a love like this.  Can you blame me?

I wonder, is it me you’re thinking of with that smile on your face? I pray you’re not at all in love with someone else.

:)

Only the lonely know what nights like these do to me.

#31: Timshel by Mumford and Sons

Ohh Mumford, I love you.  I wouldn’t be a self respecting hipster if I didn’t love Mumford and Sons, right?  This whole album is just fantastic and can be on this whole list, but instead I’ll just pick one of my favorites…or maybe I’ll do another one. We’ll see.

Timshel.  The epitome of perfection of a song, isn’t it? I could just close my eyes and have this on repeat for hours.  The lyrics are so intricate, this song could go in so many directions.  Sure, it makes me a little sad, I feel like I’m mourning the death of a loved one when I listen to it.  But then there’s that twinge of hope.

But you are not alone in this, as brothers we will stand and hold your hand.

This song makes me want to be with family.  It makes me want to sit in a graveyard.  It makes my heart swell and my throat swell.  It puts a smile on my face.  It makes me think.

#30 Belong by Cary Brothers

I haven’t updated this in awhile.  Whoops.

I first heard Cary Brothers like most people, singing the classic “Blue Eyes” on the Garden State soundtrack.  If you haven’t heard it, what’s wrong with you?  I’m also a big fan of his song “Ride” so good.  However, out of all three, my favorite would have to be “Belong” which I first discovered on Grey’s Anatomy (whatever, get at me).

It’s a sad song.  His voice has such melancholy to it, which makes it all the more beautiful and intriguing.  There is piano, there is a build up with the drums, there’s a little bit of screaming.  Absolutely pulls at the heartstrings.

The lyrics are more or less extremely depressing with no resolution, just sadness.

I was born with a broken heart…Would I give for the first night when you were mine, thought you were mine. So I’ll put the cigarette bed, pull some sheets from off your side. I put my arm around you safe in the night…But you’re wrong, I don’t belong.

OOF!.

#29: Atlas Hands by Benjamin Francis Leftwich

I recently heard this song on season 8 of Grey’s Anatomy.  I don’t hide the fact that I find out about good music from shows like Grey’s.  I’m more thankful about it.  This song got me by the singers voice.  The acoustic guitar kept me.  The lyrics made me fall in love.

I just watched the video and that makes me love it even more.

It’s a sad song.  It’s a hopeful song.  It makes me at peace.  That whole I got a plan, I got an atlas in my hands…

Jump right in and swim until you’re free.

It has this tinge of sadness to it, like all pretty things do.

I remember your face, because I’m still in love with that place.

#28: Happier by A Fine Frenzy

I first heard A Fine Frenzy, like most, from Once’s soundtrack for the song “Almost Lover”.  That song is depressing as shit.  Seriously.  However, I loved that album.  It was sad and hopeful, and beautiful.  When this song came out from her next album…I really liked it.  It was happy. It made me feel good.  I began to listen to it on repeat.

Then, I listened to the lyrics…and this song is depressing as shit too.  I guess it’s more like a screw you I’m over song…but it’s still not happy.  You go on and I’ll be happier

I love the contradiction between the lyrics and the sound of the song.  So misleading.  It makes me love her and the song that much more.  Good times.

#27: Your Winter by Sister Hazel

My last post about Semi-Charmed Life really got me on a 90’s kick.  Let’s keep the good times roll with Your Winter by Sister Hazel.  No, I’m not going to admit/lie that I liked this song before 10 Things I hate About You. It was on the soundtrack playing at a sad scene.  It was perfectly placed, and I loved this song.
Those beginning chords and lyrics are beautiful.  Then you have the rest of the song that is just so classic 90’s alt rock.  I love it. The guitars just screammmm 90’s rock.

It’s perfect.

I do have to admit I love that 10 Things I Hate About You introduced me to Sister Hazel, big fan of all their stuff, past their hits…aka All For You.
